A cooperative society is a legal entity. It is a corporate body distain members and cannot act itself. The aims and objects of the society have to be through some of the members to whom the management of the society is a body to which the management is entrusted is called the committee or the multi state cooperative society. A Committee or the governing body may be general body in terms of bye-laws of the society or in certain circumstance appointed or constituted by the Government. A more advisory or supervisory which obviously has no powers to act, direct or manage the society cannot be Committee.

A Committee has been defined to many of the Governing Body of Cooperative society whatever name called to which the management of the affairs of the society is the officer of the society has been defined to mean the President, Vice-President, Vice-Chairman, Managing Director, Secretary, Member of Committee, Liquidator, Administrator and includes any other person empowered under the bye-laws to give directions in regard to the business of a multi state society. Members of a cooperative society who arc elected co-operative societies and become officers of the society cannot have any interest directly otherwise than as such officer in:

·    Any contract made with the society.

·    Any property sold or purchased or leased by or to the society.

·   Any other transactions of the society except an investment made or a loan from the society for the provisions of residential accommodation by the scanty paid employee of the society. An officer cannot purchase any property of a member of the society recovery of dues from the member.

These prohibitions apply for a period of 2 years after the person ceases to be all of the society. In case of certain co-operative societies or class of co-operative societies a. prescribed two seats in the Committee shall be reserved, one for the member who - to scheduled caste and one for the economically weaker sections of the members such persons are elected for the reserved seats the committee shall co-opt required of members from amongst the persons entitled to such representation. When a Person ceases to be a Member of a Committee' 

A member of the Committee ceases to hold his office, if he- 

• Continues to be in default in respect of any sum due from him to the co 

Society for such period as provided in the bye-laws. 

• Ceases to be a member of the co-operative society. 

• Is declared insolvent. 

• Becomes of unsound mind. 

• Is convicted of an offence involving dishonesty and moral turpitude. 

• Becomes subject to any disqualification which would have prevented seeking election if he had incurred the disqualification before election.
